“A poet is a nightingale, who sits in darkness and sings to cheer its own solitude with sweet sounds”
This wonderful quote is by the great poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. We are sharing it today because it is World Poetry Day.
As you may have noticed we are featuring poetry a lot this year on Litrasaurus, and look forward to receiving many more lovely poems to post throughout the year.
Poetry can be wonderfully creative, allowing the writer huge scope not just to tell a story, but also to play with words. That other great writer, Edgar Allan Poe, put it like this
“I would define, in brief, the poetry of words as the rhythmical creation of beauty”.
Poems also seem to have the ability, sometimes in very few words, to evoke great emotion. Robert Frost put it like this
“Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought, and the thought has found words”.
Above all poems are very personal, more personal than stories even, and so, here, to complete our little trio of poetic quotes on this special day are the words of Michael Franti
“Every single soul is a poem”.
